At the conclusion of 21 years of the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) examinations in WA, I wish to make the announcement that I will be stepping away from the role of ‘Director of the CGL at St. Andrew’s Grammar (61002)’.

It has been my honour and privilege to have served, in this capacity, the Hellenic Community of WA, St. Andrew’s Grammar, the Centre for Hellenic Studies WA, the Greek Language and Culture Institute of Evangelismos (main contributor of candidates in recent years), Zephyros Greek Language School and, in 2025, Immaculate Heart College. I have also served those members of the Greek and wider community who are not attached to a Greek education provider, but who have chosen to sit for these examinations to ascertain their level of competency in the Greek language. I am proud to have been in the position of providing this important and unique opportunity and service to WA candidates to sit for and be accredited with the internationally recognised examination levels in the Greek language (Common European Framework for Languages). All successful candidates over the 21 years that the examinations have been offered have received a Certificate of Attainment in Greek from Greece’s Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, and the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki.

When I applied for St. Andrew’s Grammar to become the Official CGL Examination Centre in November 2004, approval was received in writing from Professor Efstathiadis, the then Director of the CGL in Thessaloniki. Following this written approval, I received from the then Consul of Greece in Perth, Mr Theodoros Michalopoulos, a Letter of Support in December 2004 for the new venture. I thank all the Consuls of Greece since then, including our current Consul, the Hon. Mrs Eleni Georgopoulou, for their ongoing support since the outset.

I thank all my co-invigilators over the years, with special mention of the following: Mr Pavlos Iosifidis, Ms Evridiki Politi, Mrs Eva Tsapazi, Mrs Katerina Reklitis, Ms Maria Svarnou, Ms Virginia Baltatzi, and Ms Chrysoula Kapsali. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with each of you during the annual 3-day examination period over the years (2005 – 2025, inclusive)!

At St. Andrew’s Grammar, I extend my thanks to all principals and staff for hosting these examinations for 20 of the 21 years! This has often meant classroom and timetable changes, with Relief Teachers having been brought in to accommodate the examinations over the three days in which they are held in May. The sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. Thank you!

Thank you to His Grace Bishop Elpidios for graciously offering the premises of the Holy Diocese in Dianella in 2025 as the examination venue when difficulties arose. I also thank His Grace for recognising my volunteer services in this capacity every New Year with a dedicated piece of Vasilopita – an acknowledgement that has meant a great deal to me.

Finally, to all the 324 candidates over the 21 years and their families, I thank you for supporting this important academic venture. It has been my utmost honour to have served you and to have provided all of you with the opportunity to achieve in these examinations. You are the reason that I have kept offering my services over this lengthy period. Thank you to all of you!
