Sunday of Orthodoxy, celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent, we remember the victory of the icons, and the defeat of the iconoclasts in 843 AD.
In this year, the icons, and their veneration were finally restored, with the affirmation that in venerating the icon, we are venerating in it the reality for which it stands. A clear distinction was also made that the icons themselves are never worshipped but only venerated, and that worship is reserved only for Him Who is the subject of our faith and is proper for the divine nature.
