In 2025, new milestones were achieved by the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) in WA.

Firstly, it is the 21st year that these academic international examinations have been offered in WA – a significant milestone for such prestigious examinations, recognised by Greece’s Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, and the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) in Thessaloniki.

It is also the first time that Immaculate Heart College (IHC) in Lower Chittering, founded in 2012 and where Modern Greek is offered, entered a candidate in these examinations. The successful student, who is of non-Greek background, is identified below and is congratulated, along with all the other successful candidates from our regular participating schools – St. Andrew’s Grammar (SAG), the Greek Language and Culture Institute (GLCI) of Evangelismos, and Zephyros Greek Language School (ZGLS).

The other first-time event was that the examinations were held at the Offices of the Holy Diocese of Perth in Dianella. Express thanks are extended to His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Perth for his willingness to accommodate the examinations at the venue, and for his prompt action in organising the setting up of each of the exam rooms. Thanks also go to the Reception and St Basil’s staff who accommodated us over the three days.

I also acknowledge the Principal of St. Andrew’s Grammar, Mr Craig Monaghan, for providing the two Greek Teachers, Ms Virginia Baltatzi and Ms Chrysoula Kapsali, to be my co-invigilators. I thank both teachers profusely for their professional assistance during this time.

In our 21st year we also had 21 candidates out of whom 17 were successful. All the levels, except for the most challenging Level C2 were attempted. The successful candidates are listed below, with the acronym of the school from which they registered in brackets.

A heartfelt congratulations is extended to all the above candidates who passed these rigorous and lengthy academic examinations! Successful candidates must score 60% or more in all sections of the examination to pass the level being attempted. Seven of the 17 candidates achieved a grade of ‘Excellent’, nine achieved a grade of ‘Very Good’, and one achieved a grade of ‘Good’.

These international examinations are aligned with the Common European Framework levels of language competence. The successful candidates will be presented with the internationally recognised Certificate of Attainment in Greek at the various end-of-year events in each of the schools.

Registrations will open on 1 February 2026 and will close on 20 March 2026. More information will be imparted closer to the opening date of registration.
