During the first half of 2020, the Battle of Crete Memorial Committee successfully obtained project support from the National Trust of WA, under whose control our fundraising will take place using the specific project name “Battle of Crete Memorial Appeal”
We are also pleased to inform readers that we have secured the support of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia who accepted our invitation to be patron of our organisation in its efforts to establish a monument. Additionally, Mr Richard Sandover has agreed to be co-patron of our committee and cause. (The Sandover name is well known to the Western Australian community and in Australian military history with Brigadier R L Sandover serving various appointments during the second world war including being commanding officer of the 2/11th Battalion.)
The purpose of the Western Australian Battle of Crete Memorial Committee is to create a specific war memorial befitting the significance that the Battle of Crete has in Australian and Greek history. In particular, the Committee seeks to commemorate the courage, sacrifice and commitment of those who served and endured the Battle of Crete.
Next year marks not only the 200th Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, but also the 80th Anniversary of the Battles of Greece and Crete. The BCMC(WA) will be holding several fundraising events in 2021and will be looking for your support.
